Listen to your voices

Yesterday I put some waffles in the toaster like any other waffle day. As I waited for them to pop up, I daydreamed a little, as I do most times I have to wait a few minutes. They popped and while I spread on some butter, the word 'honey' popped in my my mind. I hardly ever put honey on my waffles, so I figured I better listen. So I found my little honey bear, and as I watched the strings of honey drizzzle over the waffle, adhering itself to the patterns' highs and lows, the word 'nourish' came to mind. I thought about Zentangle's Rick Roberts (who is also a beekeeper) and how cool it was that he had "his girls" in the backyard that made them honey, and how many people were nourished by that honey. (Hmm... sounds a lot like Zentangle's own story if you ask me.)
I took my waffle into my office to have a little online fun while eating breakfast. As I hardly had scrolled my Facebook newsfeed, there was a post with a huge image of a bee (art by Amanda Clark). The friend who posted the photo had commented on the importance of bees and their nurturing ways, and how honey was a sacred food. Nice. Big smile from me. I then moved on to my Words with Friends game, and the first person on my list of plays had just played the word, 'honey'. Another big smile from me.
Now, as usual, I'm often not sure what to do with the information when it comes at me in this way. I just know I have to pay attention, and treasure each moment and what it has to say to me (or most likely, what I have to say to myself). All I know is that the next thing that popped in my head was to tangle Rick's Beelight in the day's calendar space. So in honor of all the bees and beekeepers and honey eaters: Beelight for January 15.
Thank you to the bees, Rick, and my own inner voice.

At the time I did the 15th, I was two days behind, so I did the 15th first, as the inspiration was so present for that one, then went backward to the 14 (I bought beads that day, can you tell?), and then Friday the 13th, the day I got my haircut (Enyshou is a fun tangle!). Catching up OR moving ahead in the daily calendar is always an option!!
A note about Beelight: The online versions don't always show the "sparkle" that you see on this example. I would encourage you to play with the 'sparkle' anytime you can. It adds a great dimension. Add some shading around the edges, and dang, it looks like it will pop off the page any minute!

  1. Love your honey story and love your three-day artwork here. Have a honey of a day!

  2. As a sometimes photographer, Words With Friends seems a more appropriate time-waster than, say, television. Bottom line, my lens is fairly empty lately. I will always justify my TV time as long as I can tie it back to wordplay. Somehow that makes it ‘educational.’ Blame my love of Scrabble, WWF and TV trivia for spawning my blog and the word game that resides therein. Still, all these distractions keep me away from my camera.

Do you find that WWF keeps you away from your art?

  3. Leona: What you've said reminds me that life is a big mystery. What may look like a time-waster may also serve as a starting point for a real creative adventure. Sometimes distractions are ways of resting our creative juices. I take it as it comes and I try not to judge it too much for myself. If I am paying attention to my 'voices,' I can tell when I am avoiding something or just resting. Thanks for the comment!

  4. That sounds like too many coincidences for one person in one morning; Serendipitous? Why, it's almost scary.

My calendar should arrive tomorrow; I shall have lots of catching up to do. Right now I am copying my tangles from my grid workbooks into my six-tangles-per-page organizer by Genevieve Crabe. It's been practice, practice, practice for me so far this year.
